The Power of Context in Judgement

We use this short video in our trainings to explore how quickly and confidently our brains form judgments with limited context.

As you watch, notice what assumptions begin to form in your mind. Most viewers experience a strong initial reaction to the main character and the situation unfolding around them. That reaction feels immediate, automatic, and certain.

Then the context changes.

This moment is powerful because it demonstrates something we discuss frequently in our programs: our first interpretation is not always the full story.

In high-stress environments and fast-paced workplaces, our brains rely on quick judgments to make sense of situations. This is a normal and necessary part of how we function. However, when we act on those early judgments without curiosity or additional context, misunderstandings and conflict can grow.

In our trainings, this video often leads into a discussion of our Judgment Iceberg tool, which helps participants explore the unseen factors that influence behavior both in ourselves and in others. Beneath every action are experiences, pressures, fears, and needs that may not be immediately visible.

By slowing down our interpretations and becoming curious about what we might be missing, we create space for more effective communication, stronger relationships, and better decision-making.

As you watch, consider:

  • What assumptions did you make early in the video?

  • What changed when new context appeared?

  • How might this apply to situations in your own work or life?
